343 Fallen but not Forgotten

The heroism of our brothers and sisters who acted on the tragic day of September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten.

To the heros who lost their lives that day, rest in peace.

To their families at home and in the firehouse who carry their legacy forward, our thoughts, love and prayers are with you every, every day.

Almost forty years ago, I first met (worked with) Gary V. Stephens. I never encountered a finer man. He looked after me. He did that for a lot of people.

Gary was a giver. Not a fool, not a take whatever you want kind of giver. But a guy you could rely on in bad times and a friend you could enjoy during good times. He gave of his time (which turned out to be too short). He helped the unions with no regard for personalities or politics. He schooled the newer guys, not just when he was acting captain but whenever they wanted to learn anything. If someone needed a ride or a hand, Gary was usually the willing helper.

Elizabeth NJ is a city marred by divisive inter-union struggles and big-city machine politics. Gary rose above all of that.

During the decades, by good fortune, we spent as much time together as I did with any other human that I wasn't married to. Gary was easy to be around. He loved having fun and never wanted to hurt anything.

He was always a seeker of the truth. He never stopped learning. He was always trying to better himself, even though he was the best already (in my eyes - at least).

They say that: if kids like you, you must be doing something right. Well, all children were draw to him. It must have been his inner goodness.

Gary is missed. There will never be anyone else like him.

In Memory of Major Terry Cannon of the Buechel Fire Protection District who passed away in January 2010. You are missed by your fellow firefighters and friends.

You have all paid the ultimate sacrifice and answered the bell when your name was called. You did not even hesitate in your mission to help others.

Your courage, heroism and bravery will never, ever, be forgotten. I salute you now and will do so for the rest of my life. To my brothers and sisters, may God keep his hand upon you and keep you in his arms.

To Lyle Garlinghouse.I have tried to be half the lieutenant you were but after 21 years I have figured out that will never happen. Rest in peace.You will never be forgotten.

It has been almost 9 years since we lost my dad in the LOD. Although it gets easier the pain and hurt never go away. My love and support to all emergency workers and a big thanks for what you do each and every day!!
