Driver Charles Mauro, age 63, of the New Haven Fire Department was killed in an apparatus accident with another vehicle while responding to a call at the Hotel Duncan on Chapel Street for a report of a structure fire. The vehicle hit the right rear side of Engine Company 2, causing the apparatus to turn overthrowing three firemen on the rear step to the pavement. Driver Mauro was thrown from the apparatus and died in the on impact. Fireman William Carey, suffered multiple injuries and was transported to St. Raphael’s Hospital by ambulance, where he later passed away.
