Katelyn has always wanted a career where she can help the people around her. Losing both of her parents, she learned she wants to help people in a similar situation as her family. Katelyn’s mother succumbed to cancer in May 2017 and five short months later, her father was killed in the line-of-duty. Katelyn’s oldest brother is guardian to her and her other siblings.
Katelyn was invited to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars during her freshman year. With the help of the Sarbanes Scholarship, she plans to graduate and to perform social work in either the child and family welfare, or in the substance abuse field.
Jack Diaz, Assistant Chief (Retired) of the Winner Volunteer Fire Department and Memorial Weekend Family Escort for the Manger family says, “Katelyn was forced to mature and become a primary caregiver for her younger siblings. She exhibits the same strong work ethic that her parents instilled in her. She is compassionate and is dedicated to becoming a social worker to help others as she was helped in her time of need.”
