On April 17, 1922, just after 7:00 pm a St. Louis fire engine responding to a call collided with a sedan and a street car. The sedan pulled out into traffic, the responding engine swerved to car and collided with a street car. Four of the firefighters were thrown from the apparatus and the operator of the street car was trapped in the wreck. Passing motorists worked to help those injured in the crash. Lieutenant Michael Kane, Driver Eugene Carten, Pipeman John Haas were killed and Pipeman Daniel Finnnegan and Motorman Fred Tanune were seriously injured.
